Florida: The day…
It’s primary day in Florida and the GOP race that could be decided here has a lot of questions attached to it. For starters, how far will Rudy fall? Besides that, though, attention turns to frontrunners McCain and Romney. Their fierce battle filled with vitriol and potentially damaging accusations is down to the wire and leaves them separated by anywhere from zero to five-points. Final polls have s slight trend toward McCain due to the Charlie Crist endorsement, but the Sunshine State’s closed primary could mean that the smiling governor’s backing just levels the playing field. McCain’s gonna’ have to hope to heck that the moderate streak of us Floridians in national politics comes through again.
The feeling this morning, as the tireless workers of PB stepped out an a frighteningly cold FL dawn (37-40 degrees - well, cold for us…, was that the GOP race is essentially a two-man race. Romney and McCain are the only campaigns getting media attention, making calls, doing serious advertising on radio and TV, and they’re the candidates on the minds of voters. Huckabee and Giuliani have been boxed out by the crush of press as Mitt and JMac duke it out. Then it’s no surprise that Huckabee is set to flee the state for Missouri later this afternoon and Rudy is struggling with final day GOTV efforts. Though he is unflappably upbeat about his chances…
But the real fight is between McCain and Romney, Romney and McCain. Back to that morning feeling down here: While the polls are all trending McCain because of Crist, the ground report here is that Romney has the edge with traditional GOP voters because of the economy and his tough immigration talk over national security for JMac and Rudy. The Boca debate seemed to help Mitt a ton on general good will and appreciation for his street smarts on the issues. McCain is getting a lot of criticism for his angry appearance, but the lure of the war on terror and his support for the successful Iraq surge is still a factor. This thing will be down the wire…
