Like any sane Republican (James Dobson, who backed Huckabee today, is neither fully sane or a true Republican…) would go against the maverick juggernaut that is The Mac.

Thompson never went as hard against McCain as Romney, so he always had a nice window open to jump on board whoever got to be the frontrunner once Fred was out of the race. So today he decided to back McCain.  

“This is no longer about past preferences or differences. It is about what is best for our country and for me that means that Republican should close ranks behind John McCain,” Thompson said in a statement reported by the Associated Press.

Gives JMac more cred and another base of supporters. Not like he’s in an actual race anymore…
