Ex-candidate John Edwards is being pressed to the max by both Hillary and Obama for an endorsement as the race tightens and each contender looks for that little extra edge that JRE support would give. A scattering of delegates, sure; but it’s his rank-and-file voters and superdelegates that are what count even as much as his personal blessing. Though most of his pledged supporters probably have moved on to other candidates already, their checkbooks could still be closed. Would an Edwards endorsement open them up?
Biggest surprise in this was JRE’s secret meeting with Hillary at his NC mansion last week. No word of that came out until the weekend. It’s a mega-shock due to his general distaste for anything HRC. His supporters were also adamant that they would vote for “anyone but Hillary” once he exited the race.
Then there’s Obama. Is the mere fact that Edwards is entertaining offers from Hillary a slap in the face to the possible frontrunner? Is it a sign that the beloved populist is angered by Obama using his message to pick up his former supporters on the trail and then dumping it once Super Tuesday was a memory?
More can be implied, perhaps, by the news today that a scheduled meeting this afternoon between Obama and Edwards was canceled (to be “rescheduled)- ostensibly because of “scheduling conflicts.” Code for “I’m backing Hillary”?
Obama himself could see the message, because he was adamant on the trail today that the meeting with JRE would happen - eventually.
