• Tomorrow’s Chesapeake primary trio of D.C., Maryland and Virginia have become more important than ever for the reeling Hillary campaign. The weekend sweep by Obama hit harder than expected and has given the Barack-friendly press ammo to pound HRC as a candidate whose time has passed and whose campaign is crumbling beneath her. Despite playing the expectations game well by repeatedly proclaiming nearly all of the Dem contests until Ohio and Texas in March to be ripe for Obama wins, the momentum of those victories created within the media and the antsy rank-and-file, who are desperately seeking early closure for this marathon campaign, is getting out of hand. The Clinton camp has retooled their strategy for tomorrow and are now actively pushing for victory in Virginia, the most likely state for any Hillary upset. Maryland and D.C. have strong bases of African American Dems, so VA is the only refuge where HRC and her white crowds can put up a last-minute firewall. She’s also counting on Latino support in Virginia. Immigration and the natural flow north from Hispanic-rich states like Georgia and North Carolina have boosted the Latino population of The Commonwealth to almost 10%. They’ll all need to come out for Hillary in order to manufacture a crazy win.
  • Trying to grab the golden electability argument from Obama’s camp, Bill Clinton is raising hell on the trail again as HRC’s overworked handlers can’t hold POTUS 42 back from his public shenanigans. His latest jolt to the Hillary cause in the Chesapeake primary is his insistence that HRC can win over more moderate Republicans in the general than Obama can. This strange little sentiment is based on nothing more than Hillary’s success in winning huge majorities in her Senate campaigns in New York. Liberal NY should never be compared to the nation as a whole: Shame on you, Bill.
  • Obamamentum continues: His weekend/Monday ride across the three Potomac states voting tomorrow has again attracted gigantic crowds wherever he goes. Yesterday’s rally in Alexandria, VA was especially significant for the Obama campaign, as the locale provided access to voters from Virginia, Maryland and The District. At least 3,000 Obama fans crowded into a high school to hear him speak. Hillary doesn’t come close to crowds like that, although she got the D.C. brass to visit her stop at a Washington church this morning.
  • More consensus behind McCain for the GOP: Long-time social conservative activist Gary Bauer has endorsed McCain today. It’s a good comeback after James Dobson thumbed his nose in JMac’s face and angrily backed Huckabee last week. Still, these endorsements and non-endorsements have little impact at this late stage of the race. McCain is mathematically safe. Bauer’s statement:
    • “John McCain has dedicated his life to defending human rights around the world, including the rights of the unborn,” said Mr. Bauer. “I admire his consistent 24-year pro-life record and demonstrated commitment to the values that keep our families and communities strong. John McCain alone has the experience, character and credibility to lead as commander in chief on day one and defeat the transcendent threat of our time — radical Islamic extremism. I am proud to support John McCain for president.”
