PA: Minor issues in Philly, no “major” irregularities
Any whiff of voting problems is always something to keep an eye on; the Pennsylvania primary,. like most contests, is not immune.
Potential issues in African-American neighborhoods of Philly were first reported by staffers with Obama’s campaign. Interestingly enough, most of the media and state officials treated the allegations as a partisan hack job: Earlier in the afternoon, a state spokesperson proclaimed that there were virtually no problems anywhere in PA.
According to Leslie Amoros, a spokeswoman for the Pennsylvania State Department, there have been no major voter irregularities in the state.
“It’s just been minor, normal kinds of stuff,” she said. “Nothing major, nothing widespread.”
This didn’t sit well with local voting workers on the ground in Philly or the Obama camp. They were reporting everything from problems with voting equipment to outright intimidation from, you guessed it - pro-Hillary supporters. A racial undercurrent has stained the incidents in Philly further. Most of the pro-Hillary troublemakers have been Latinos apparently infiltrating black areas of the city and shouting down pro-Obama crowds and even using loudspeakers to keep people away from the polls. It’s nasty, folks.
Philly Daily News is on scene and concurs with the Obama campaign that problems are prevalent. The city police are even getting involved.
The Daily News’ Regina Medina is at the 19th Ward, 18th division right now — that’s at 4th and York — watching something that’s apparently happened a couple of times today in that part of town:
A skirmish at the polls. This was was described as “posing and shouting,” but others say the police have been called to the area a couple of times so far today.
Some of the trouble may have been prompted by a silver SUV equipped with a sound system that was LOUDLY broadcasting pro-Hillary, pro-Rep. Angel Cruz slogans in English and Spanish. Several witnessed told Regina that Cruz himself was in the car.Â
Could this push back the Obama vote from Philly until later this evening, giving HRC an early advantage and extra moral boost?
