Obama Comments On Iranian Election
With a hotly contested election in Iran still undecided amidst “unprecedented” turnout and claims of victory from both Ahmadinejad and his challenger, President Obama took time to offer his carefully worded thoughts on the landmark election and any role his own victory and his recent trip to the Middle East had to play in the process.
“We are excited to see what appears to be a robust debate taking place in Iran, and obviously after the speech that I made in Cairo, we tried to send a clear message that we think there is the possibility of change.
Ultimately, the election is for the Iranians to decide. But just as has been true in Lebanon, what can be true in Iran as well, is that you’re seeing people looking at new possibilities and whoever ends up winning the election in Iran, the fact that there has been a robust debate hopefully will help advance our ability to engage them in new ways.”
Is the president “taking credit” for a potential Ahmadinejad defeat as some critics have already claimed? Or is he just stating the obvious fringe benefits of an end to “cowboy diplomacy”? You decide…
