Chuck Schumer offered a bullish outlook on the Senate push for health care legislation in an interview with Matt Lauer on NBC’s “Today” show on Monday.
Faced with growing questions over the viability of Majority Leader Harry Reid’s bill after it barely got the 60 votes to move it ahead for debate on Saturday, Schumer, the leading voice of Senate liberals, said he was confident that reform “will get done” but that Dems may have to “give a little” in order to secure a filibuster-proof margin for a final vote on health care legislation.
He hinted at likely changes to the legislation in a bid to secure the 60 votes necessary once it gets back on the Senate floor, but he also made it clear that Republicans may be pushed aside if Democrats can lock up enough of their own caucus to pas legislation.
“I think every one of the 60 Democratic senators, you can even tell it in the tone of some of the remarks, wants to have a bill,” Schumer said Monday during an interview on NBC. “We all know we’re going to have to give a little; that’s what happened in the vote Saturday night, that’s what happened here.”

“We never expected the bill that Leader Reid put on the floor to pass exactly as-is,” Schumer argued. “Everyone has their ideas on the public option, for instance.”

“I believe at the end of the day the moderate, opt-out public option will prevail,” Schumer said. “It will get done. If we have to do it with just 60 Democratic votes, we will come together and do it.”
